Chapter one

Not in the Dark

Ely, Nevada sits at six thousand four hundred feet, and the wind never quits. We lived on Campton Street in a company house, four rooms, and you could hear the mill whistle from the kitchen.

My father Harold worked the copper mine. He came home with copper dust in the creases of his neck, and my mother Ruth would make him wash on the back porch before supper, even in January.

He never complained about the work. What he talked about was the dark. Twelve hours under the ground, he said, and you forget what colour the sky is.

The summer I turned sixteen he walked me up to the headframe and let me look down the shaft. Then he put his hand on my shoulder.

Walt, he told me, a man can do honest work anywhere, but do not do it in the dark if you have a choice.

I swore I would never go underground.

In 1972 I was twenty one and just married to Marianne. A fellow at the Elks lodge said the power company was hiring down in Las Vegas. We packed the Plymouth the next weekend.

Marianne cried when we crossed the county line. I told her we would come back every summer, and for thirty years we did.

Will the memoir really sound like them?

That is the whole point. Legacy's editor keeps their phrases, their meaning, and their way of telling a story. They read the finished memoir and change anything they like before it is final.

Who sees the stories? Are they private?

The storyteller's conversations belong to the storyteller. If someone gave Legacy as a gift, that person is told when the gift is activated and when the book is on its way, and nothing more: never the conversations, never the manuscript.
